General Summary: 

Operates heavy power-operated equipment such as backhoes, front-end loaders and bulldozers used in the construction, maintenance and/or repair of roadways, parking lots, culverts, sidewalks, drainage systems, underground conduits, etc.; operate heavy dump trucks, snow plows, sanders, tractor-drawn mowers, riding mowers and other equipment for roadway, parking lot, pathway, sidewalk and grounds maintenance; operate light vehicles such as passenger cars and panel trucks for transporting personnel and materials; perform routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment; maintain records and prepare reports; inspect contractual services; and perform related work as required.

Maintenance Equipment Operators work under exposure to adverse weather conditions and environmental hazards such as noise, fumes and gases; lift and carry heavy objects; will work varied shifts, weekends, holidays, nights; and is subject to a standby (on call) work status.

Examples of Duties

  • Operates heavy power-operated equipment such as cranes, backhoes, front-end loaders, bulldozers and catch basin machines used to construct, maintain or repair roadways, parking lots, culverts, pathways, sidewalks, underground conduits, parks or drainage systems.
  • Operates heavy dump trucks, snow plows, sanders, sweepers or tractor-drawn mowers, power mowers, etc.to maintain roadways, parking lots, pathways, sidewalks and grounds.
  • Performs routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment such as lubricating, fueling, cleaning and checking tire pressure, battery, oil, water and coolant levels.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports on such matters as vehicle use, mileage, destinations, accidents, gas and other vehicle expenses, such as fuel, repairs
  • Performs related duties such as loading and unloading furniture, equipment and supplies; mixing and applying materials such as sand, salt, gravel, etc.
  • Performs routine manual labor such as shoveling, salting, mowing, digging, removing leaves, cleaning culverts, and dumping debris.
  • Operates equipment such as winches, chain saws, jackhammers and grinders.
  • Determines the need for maintenances or repair of building structures or the maintenance, repair or replacement of equipment to provide appropriate information to superiors.
  • Reviews work orders, sketches and diagrams to determine material, equipment and personnel necessary to complete required work.
  • Oversee the work of maintainers on jobs requiring mechanical and manual labor.

Qualifications: 

  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class II Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class C CDL license with Air Brake Endorsement Required Equipment Operator’s License issued by the Department of Public Safety.
  • Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations governing the operation of motor vehicles and heavy power-operated equipment used in excavating, grading and related construction activities.
  • Knowledge of the types, uses and characteristics of heavy power-operated equipment used in excavating, grading and related construction activities.
  • Knowledge of the types and characteristics of motor vehicles.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in the operation of motor vehicles and heavy power-operated equipment used in excavating, grading and related construction activities.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance procedures relative to heavy power-operated equipment used in excavating, grading and related construction activities.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of snow removal and ice control equipment.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of hand held power tools.
  • Skill in the operation of motor vehicles and heavy power-oriented equipment used in excavating, grading and related construction and maintenance activities.
  • Skill in using hand held power tools.
  • Ability to understand and apply the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, specifications, blueprints, drawings, schematics, job layouts, etc.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend the English language.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to make decisions and act quickly in emergency situations.
