General Summary: 

The Fitness and Wellness Manager is responsible for the development, implementation and administration of a culturally-centered and comprehensive fitness program within the Recreation Department of the Division of Athletics and Recreation that reflects the diversity of the campus. The Manager ensures the needs of all members, including students, faculty, staff and community are well served by offering group fitness, personal training, small group training, fitness outreach, and specialized programs. The Manager is also responsible for the management of the fitness staff and equipment.

Examples of Duties: 

  • Is responsible for all aspects of fitness programming within the Beacon Fitness Center and other auxiliary spaces; supervise and monitor the fitness floor, as well as fitness equipment maintenance; directly supervise the work performed by part-time and student employees.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, evaluate, supervise, and provide on-going training to all fitness staff, including fitness attendants, group fitness instructors, personal trainers, and facility cleaning attendants. Create student ePAFs and maintain time-keeping.
  • Audition group fitness instructors, create class schedule and continuously assess quality of fitness instruction.
  • Is responsible for providing a vibrant, robust and inclusive fitness program, including group fitness, personal training, and related instructional programming. Revenue generation is expected.
  • Develop and manage the fitness budget in accordance with established policies and procedures, including creation of purchasing requisitions and bank card purchases.
  • Ensure safety procedures are followed and enforced within the Beacon Fitness Center; oversee policy and procedures
    for all operations of fitness programming.
  • Work with Assistant Director of Recreational Services and Programming to actively communicate and market all programs through print media, electronic media, social media, special events and other efforts as appropriate, including participation in new student orientation sessions, open houses and various tabling events.
  • Conduct personal training appointments with clients and teach group fitness classes, as needed.
  • Assist in policy and procedure development, budget preparation, risk management policies, safety regulations and emergency procedures for all fitness components.
  • Develop interest in new and emerging fitness and related instructional programs; Conduct participant satisfaction surveys to evaluate quality of programming and to help determine new programming; Collaborate with university departments, divisions, and student organizations to create and enhance programming opportunities.
  • Assist with special events hosted by the department and be a strong liaison and partner for collaborative health and wellness programming across campus.
  • Oversee the administration of health risk appraisals, submaximal exercise testing, fitness assessments and all other aspects of personal training.
  • Is responsible for the maintenance of fitness equipment, including purchasing parts.
  • Report regularly on programming and participation.
  • Schedule and coordinate to host nationally recognized fitness certification and wellness workshops.
  • Administer fitness programming component of recreation software.
  • Assist Manager of Intramural Programs and Informal Recreation Program with daily operation and supervision of summer recreational day camp.
  • Assist with staff supervision of all recreation facilities, where appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology or related field such as but not limited to exercise physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, fitness, health promotion. Master’s Degree preferred, and preferably one-three (1-3) years of experience working in a collegiate recreational setting or health club setting with supervisory experience. Demonstrated success with the implementation and management of fitness programming, including group fitness, personal training and small group training. Current and valid certification and qualifications in the following is required at time of hire, as well as through the duration of employment:

  • American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or American Council on Exercise (ACE) certifications or a related
  • certification in the field of exercise health and science
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certification by a nationally recognized certification group (NCAA
  • accredited)
  • Demonstrated experience with implementation and management of fitness and wellness programming.
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with Microsoft Office, as well as other administrative software programs and systems.
  • Ability to work with other elements of the university community in utilizing the athletic and recreation facilities.
  • Ability to form effective relationships within the division and campus community, as well as with students, student groups, staff and faculty.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong commitment to customer service.
