General Summary: 

The Associate Director of Environmental Health and Safety will assist the Director of Environmental Health and Safety in the development, coordination and administering of programs in environmental health and safety, to ensure that university operations, including research and instructional laboratories, meet all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Labor (DOL) and other governmental laws and regulations.

This position may be assigned formal on-call duties in accordance with Article 18.3 of the contract between the University and the Professional Staff Union. Assignment of on-call will be detailed using the “On-Call Assignment (Professional Staff) Form.”

Examples of Duties: 

    • Assure compliance with rules and regulations governing fire and safety programs for UMass Boston.
    • Conduct inspections and audits to identify and address potential risks to students, faculty and staff; promote activities to encourage prevention of injury and illness.
    • Manage indoor air quality (IAQ) investigations and mitigation; develop preventive IAQ strategies.
    • Manage occupational safety programs in cooperation with the Facilities Department and other university departments, including hot work permits, ladder safety, lock-out tag-out, confined space entry, respiratory protection, protective equipment and hearing conservation.
    • Develop SOPs and guidance on health and safety issues.
    • Manage construction and renovation safety programs, including assessing asbestos and hazardous building materials, review contractor safety plans.
    • Direct the fire and life safety program, including building evacuation, fire drills, fire safety and coordination of fire safety volunteers
    • Support the laboratory safety program, including chemical hazard characterization/evaluation as needed and oversee engineering controls (inspections, issues, etc.).
    • Conduct occasional accident/injury investigations and develop prevention programs and strategies; coordinate staff in various departments in their efforts to assure the enforcement of health and safety practices.
    • Conduct ergonomic evaluations as requested by HR for accommodation requests
    • Participate in Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) training such as orientation for university personnel and students.
    • Support OEHS on-line training program for university personnel and students.
    • Provide training to the university community on a variety of health and safety topics
    • Participate in the OEHS Emergency Response Program with 24-hour duties.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

Master’s degree in science, Engineering, Occupational Health or a closely related field and a minimum of five years (or a bachelor's degree and seven to ten years of work experience of progressively responsible EHS work preferably in a higher education and/or research laboratory setting, of which a minimum of three years included supervisory and management experience, is required. Expertise with PC-based applications, including Microsoft products required. Experience preparing and presenting EHS trainings, recordkeeping and reporting. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) preferred.

    • Knowledge of federal, state and municipal EHS laws and regulations, national codes and standards and best practices.
    • Knowledge of IAQ investigation methods.
    • Knowledge of and experience in a wide range of building engineering principles and practices, including HVAC and mechanical systems.
    • Knowledge of and experience in the investigation of complex exposure scenarios, especially about indoor air quality.
    • Ability to interact effectively with a broad range of constituents, in a diverse and multicultural environment.
    • Strong supervisory skills.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills.
    • Strong commitment to customer service.
