General Summary: 

The Simulation Operations Specialist, within the Manning College of Nursing and Health Sciences’ Center for Clinical Education and Research (CCER), works under the direction of the CCER Director to support staff, instructors and learners in the use of immersive simulation methodologies. The Simulation Operations Manager supports educational sessions using sophisticated simulation technologies and modalities to meet the educational objectives of undergraduate and graduate-level nursing students.

Examples of Duties: 

Simulation Events

  • Prepare the facility, manikins, audio-visual systems and clinical equipment for simulation events;
  • Create moulage and other needed materials for simulation events as stipulated in the scenario checklist;
  • Program and operate simulation equipment during simulation events with instructors; Ensure all simulation equipment is set up and functional prior to running course programs;
  • Operate the controls for patient simulators and AV equipment during scenario sessions;
  • Participate in ongoing maintenance program for all simulation-based equipment, medical devices, capital equipment and the Center as a whole including cleaning, testing, troubleshooting, obtaining quotes for replacement parts, repairing, and assuring that all equipment is in good working order;
  • Troubleshoot simulator software and hardware problems;
  • Function as liaison with manufacturer and vendors; Schedules repair and upgrades where necessary;
  • Complete set up and clean-up of simulation environments and skills lab spaces;

Faculty Development

  • Demonstrates, teaches and supports the technical aspects of operating simulators to faculty and staff;
  • Provides orientation training for those who will use simulation equipment;
  • Develop and implement a robust training check-off procedure to consider faculty “certified” for independent use of simulation equipment and facilities;
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff to create innovative, productive approaches that will maximize the utilization of task trainers and simulators, AV technologies and associated equipment.

Leadership and Management

  • Collaborate with IT and AV departments as needed for network support, desktop services and simulation server support; and infrastructure development for simulation equipment. i.e. wifi technology, security systems, sim interactions through IT system.
  • Identify opportunities for simulation and lab growth.
  • Serves as a point of contact with equipment manufacturers to maintain functionality, coordinate maintenance repairs and maintains a record of repairs; Liaise with equipment manufacturers and clinicians regarding equipment and software upgrades, updates, and beta testing initiatives.
  • Stays current with emerging simulation technology;
  • Supervises work study students and graduate teaching assistants;
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and conduct routine inventory updates; coordinates with staff and faculty to identify required supplies for lab activities and simulation events;
  • Provide recommendations for operational and capital budget expenses;
  • Attend staff meetings and in-service trainings as required;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum of three to five years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience in healthcare/other simulation or a related field. Bachelor’s degree required with a concentration in computer science, technology or health-related field preferred. Clinical experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of Learning Management Systems and simulation software applications with ability to quickly adapt and troubleshoot
  • Competency in computer skills
  • Must be able to move equipment less than 25 lbs independently; occasionally lift/carry over 100 lbs (simulation manikins) with the assistance of others
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment;
  • Available to flex to evenings and weekend hours as determined by semester calendar
