The School for Global Inclusion and Social Development (SGISD) in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Vision Studies with expertise in preparing teachers of students with visual impairment (TSVI), to begin September 1, 2022. While certification in Orientation and Mobility (O&M), Vision Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT), Assistive Technology for People with Visual Impairment (AT) and other areas of vision expertise are preferred, we will consider a strong candidate with credentials in one area who will pursue the additional credentials as soon as reasonably possible. Experience with organizational behavior and a research and practice focus that addresses inclusion at the local, national and global levels are also required.
The SGISD is an innovative school focused on developing leaders in the area of inclusion. Established in 2012, the school is comprised of programs in Global Inclusion and Social Development (MA and PhD), Master's programs in Vision Studies and Rehabilitation Counseling, Certificate programs in Vision Studies, Transition Leadership and Human Rights as well as an undergraduate program in Asian American Studies. Operating under a transdisciplinary model, the school promotes the development of leaders in global inclusion and social development with grounding in, and transdisciplinary knowledge of, preparation of highly qualified professionals in visual impairment as well as skills in quantitative and qualitative research, training and community capacity development. Our programs particularly focus on addressing institutional barriers to inclusion, as well as the strengths, needs, and aspirations of populations who experience exclusion within their societies due to structural and cultural inequalities related to gender, race, ethnicity, language, age, disability, religious practice, sexual orientation, gender identity and other bases of social, political, and economic inequality and injustice.
An earned doctorate in visual impairment, special education, rehabilitation, allied health, sociology, human services, or a related field is required, as well as clear evidence of excellence in both research and teaching. Current credential as a TSVI is required. Additional certifications, e.g. ACVREP certification as an COMS, CVRT, CLVT, or CATIS are preferred. We are looking for someone with research expertise and a track record in securing external funding in one or more of the following areas: personnel preparation in visual impairment, TVI, O&M, VRT, AT, low vision, assessment, international development; and/or other research on pressing social issues with clear practice and impact in visual impairment. Successful candidates will have also demonstrated their interest and skill in building socially inclusive organizations and communities.
Candidates are expected to have command of both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Additionally, candidates should have a program of inquiry and program development that has attracted external funding or has the promise to do so. Excellence in teaching and publications is essential. Candidates are also expected to contribute to the mission of both the SGISD and UMass Boston, as a participant in service-learning activities and related contributions, as well as partake in student recruitment.
The successful candidate is expected to contribute in the three areas of scholarship, teaching, and service required at UMass Boston. Bi/multilingual competence is also desirable.
