General Summary: 

The Assistant Director of Donor Engagement and Stewardship reports to and works with the Director of Donor Engagement and Stewardship to design and implement an institution-wide comprehensive stewardship program that acknowledges and appreciates donors at all levels of support and demonstrates the value of donor investments across the university, ultimately leading to deeper engagement with UMass Boston. The Assistant Director of Donor Engagement and Stewardship will partner with colleagues in University Advancement, as well as administration and academic units to ensure the timely use and reporting of endowed funds, scholarships, commemorative and other types of commitments. Propose and implement new engagement opportunities using progressive contact methods that draw our donors closer to the university and begin to forge a true University of Massachusetts Boston alumni community in key cities around the world. 

Examples of Duties: 

  • Coordinate and produce donor acknowledgment and appreciation correspondence. Prepare and help distribute communiques and other targeted pieces to our wide-ranging constituents including acknowledgement letters from the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor, thank you letters, endowed fund reports, and impactful videos;
  • Develop creative communications to recognize tribute (honor/memory) commitments from principal and leadership gifts donors, loyal donors, as well as first-time donors; and welcome new members into the annual leadership giving society; partner with other units to refresh content semi-regularly. Input information into Advance database as necessary;
  • Generate content that conveys the impact of private philanthropic support on our students, faculty and our campus via dynamic areas of potential support that can distributed via mail, email, social media, and video platforms; maintain a stewardship communications calendar that dovetails with university-wide communications and other Advancement outreach. Participate in the implementation of strategic communications to cohorts of donors or individual donors, including but not limited to customized reports, mailings, emails, or event invitations;
  • Work with academic units, Merit Scholarship, and Financial Aid offices to ensure that all private scholarship funds are awarded appropriately and in keeping with donor-established criteria; using AcademicWorks, ThankView, and other tools, collect and edit scholarship gratitude materials for all stewarded funds; manage donor notification of scholarship awards and create systems to track recipient information in the Customer Relations Management system (CRM). Participate in the creation of scholarship-specific stewardship communications including event invitations, annual reports, and digital content;
  • Participate in the creation of internal endowed fund communications and serve as the point of contact for internal partners who have questions about the endowed funds in their portfolio; conduct semi-regular audits to ensure compliance with donor intentions; collaborate with development officers as well as Deans and business staff within units across campus to review spending processes of endowed funds; gather information about fund expenditures for external donor reports;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of five to seven years of advancement experience or experience in higher education administration is required.  Additional requirements include fluency in the methodologies and trends in a contemporary donor relations office as well as demonstrated experience working with Constituent Record Management (CRM) systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required;
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, collate and analyze data, adapt to change, and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment;
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and work with confidential and time sensitive information and materials;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Strong multi-media communication skills;
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with strong attention to detail;
  • Strong sense of ownership, follow-through, and orientation towards results;
  • Strong commitment to customer service.
