General Summary:
This role will be key in ensuring that all students at UMass Boston have equitable access to the Honors College, by creating clear pathways to join Honors for a wide range of students on campus, coordinating orientation and first-year programming, and mentoring students. This position will be key to promoting success and retention.
Recruitment and Admissions: This position will be responsible for recruiting and admitting a wide range of students to the Honors College, including first-time first-year students, continuing students, transfer students, participants in pre-collegiate and early-college programs, etc. The position will focus on providing equitable access to the Honors College for students from underrepresented groups, transfer students, Boston public school students, and students from pre-collegiate pipeline programs. This position will organize all aspects of the direct application process for prospective students, continuing students, and transfer students (including assessment of their previous experience as it relates to Honors College credits and requirements), and will track the diversity of each incoming class of Honors students. Such a role involves key coordination with a large number of offices on campus, including but not limited to SEAS (Student Equity, Access, and Success), Enrollment Management, pre-collegiate programs, and New Student Programs among others. As part of recruitment efforts, the position will coordinate the Honors portions of Open House and Welcome Day events, thereby ensuring that all prospective and accepted students are aware of the benefits of an Honors education, and that the Honors College experience is accessible to them.
First Year Experience and Programming: This position will coordinate and implement orientation programming and first-year experience programming designed to promote student success and retention. This will include university-wide programming – by interfacing with New Student Programs to coordinate the Honors portion of the Beacon Beginnings orientations – and also the coordination and implementation of Honors-specific programming during orientation and throughout the first-year experience.
Mentoring: This position will provide individual mentoring for a group of Honors students. Honors students receive holistic mentoring that involves providing guidance on Honors coursework, securing internships, research, and other hands-on experiences in order to prepare them for a Senior Honors Thesis.
With its mix of recruitment and admissions, coordination of first-year programming, and mentoring, this position will improve student success and enhance UMass Boston’s reputation in having an Honors College that provides rigorous interdisciplinary coursework and research opportunities to students across all majors, who reflect the campus-wide UMass Boston student body.
