General Summary: 

Reporting to the Director of Research Computing, the Research Computing Consultant/ Systems Engineer will work with senior staff and faculty to facilitate use of Research Computing systems and technologies.  The incumbent will regularly  engage researchers, via consultations and training, in the use of state-of-the-art Research Computing systems, tools, and software to enable research  productivity. The incumbent will provide Linux workstation and general technology support for research needs; will serve as a resource for researchers; and will compile, install, configure and support scientific applications. The incumbent will also assist with pre- purchase hardware  specification, design, installation and configuration of workstations, servers and related  equipment; and will administrator, monitor and maintain high performance compute cluster(s) and storage, compute, and web servers for use by faculty, staff and students for research.

Examples of Duties: 

  • Participate in hardware specification, building, configuring, and running Research 
  • Computing (RC) systems, including HPC clusters, servers and workstations
  • Monitor and maintain RC systems, including upgrades and patching with attention to security
  • Regularly engage a diverse set of researchers  via support requests and in-person or virtual consultations during office hours
  • Define, monitor and report performance metrics  to ensure effective and efficient use of RC resources
  • Compile, install, configure and support scientific applications for faculty, research staff and students
  • Support and collaborate with researchers,  decentralized IT support personnel, and 
  • key central IT personnel (e.g. systems, operations, and security)
  • Working with researchers, assist with design and debugging of research workflows
  • Assist researchers with determining optimal technology solutions for their needs
  • Regularly contribute to best practices documentation and knowledge transfer
  • Help build curriculum and lead training workshops researchers on the use of RC resources
  • Assist with marketing RC programs and initiatives
  • May mentor student employees
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant post-secondary education or relevant work experience or a combination of the two
  • Three-five years of Linux Systems administration and/or Linux customer service is required.
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to advocate for and cultivate an environment that 
  • supports diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEI&A).
  • Scripting skills, including Bash, Python, Perl is required.
  • Working knowledge of at least one high-level language (C, C++, Fortran) is preferred.
  • Experience with Mac OS and web applications, including LAMP is preferred.
  • Experience in HPCC and storage administration preferred.
  • Working knowledge of research-related  hardware, software, practices and toolsets
  • Ability to work well on collaborative, cross-functional teams, that include both 
  • technical and non- technical members, to accomplish assigned tasks
  • Ability to adapt to evolving service and technology paradigms
  • Ability to excel in a dynamic and changing environment with competing priorities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong commitment to customer service.
