General Summary: 

Under the direction of the Associate Controller, the Financial Analyst/Accountant is responsible for performing a variety of accounting functions that support the production of financial statements that are in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”).  The Financial Analyst/Accountant works closely with the Property Specialist to account for capital assets and oversee the management of campus property and inventory control requirements as mandated by Federal & State regulatory agencies and the University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees.  The Financial Analyst/Accountant also supports the Controller’s Staff in reconciling system interfaces and recording adjusting entries, if necessary, for all university financial activity.

Examples of Duties: 

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and year end capital asset journal entries as supported by the detail in the asset management system.
  • Assist in the procurement workflow process to ensure equipment requisitions are appropriate, accurate and budgeted, if applicable.
  • Reconcile asset additions recorded by the Property Specialist agree with payments made to vendors via the accounts payable system.
  • Review and monitor new and/or updated information in the asset management system to ensure accuracy and appropriateness of data. Confirm documentation for the update is attached/electronically filled.
  • Assist the Property Specialist in a variety of tasks including tagging, tracking, transferring of assets between departments and processing surplus items, following campus inventory control policy and procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation of the monthly Chapter 641 Report, identifying property removed from the asset management system classified as lost or stolen.
  • Investigate property purchased outside of the university procurement system for appropriateness.
  • Assist the Sr. Financial Analyst/Accountant with a variety of general ledger functions.
  • Provide training to employees on a variety of accounting policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Education—bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field required
  • 1-3 years of experience in accounting, auditing and/or financial operations
  • Familiarity with integrated financial systems and the Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience in Higher Education, government or non-profit organizations preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of GASB accounting principles
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Knowledge of standard inventory control methods and practices
