General Summary: 

Reporting to the Assistant Director of the Center for Academic Excellence, the Academic Coach serves as a member of the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) team.  Academic coaching is a collaborative learning process that takes place between a coach and a student as they examine the student's academic strengths and needs. Coaches offer guidance and identify strategies that can help students navigate academic policies and achieve their academic goals. Academic coaches provide students with continuous support in various academic elements, such as learning/study strategies, academic integrity, and time management. Coaches understand that each student has different strengths and perspectives and strive to accommodate each student's academic needs. Academic coaches also work with students to help them understand and navigate the University’s academic policies. Academic coaches provide support for undergraduate and graduate students.

Examples of Duties: 

  • Provide customized one-to-one student-centered academic coaching using a relationship-based model. Coach students on how to evaluate their course demands, analyze academic tasks, and construct and apply general and discipline-specific learning strategies. Supported areas range from time management, organization, and goal setting to test preparation, note-taking, communication with faculty, academic integrity, and more.
  • Provide support and guidance to students referred through the University’s Student Referral Program (SRP).
  • Work with the CAE Assistant Directors in the development and delivery of in-class presentations/workshops throughout the semester. These presentations accommodate faculty requests and/or requests from other departments/student organizations, and they deliver learning assistance to the broader population of students.
  • Spearhead equity-minded initiatives that will advance CAE objectives and further develop the area of academic coaching. Such initiatives may include development of new workshops and marketing materials, collaboration with other departments, outreach to special populations, and data collection and analysis.
  • Conduct outreach to students, faculty and staff regarding support services provided by academic coaching.
  • Maintain a spreadsheet of utilization data regarding academic coaching services.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled staff and supervision meetings, as well as in-service training opportunities.
  • Participate in professional development activities, when available, on relevant topics, such as cultural competence, equity, inclusion, and coaching practices.
  • Contribute to social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitter).
  • Collaborate with CAE team members as needed.
  • Strive to uphold the mission of the CAE as a center guided by the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Actively advance a culture of accessibility, inclusivity, anti-racism, and disability rights and advocacy throughout the CAE and UMass Boston community.
  • Perform other duties as needed.


  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 2-3 years in a higher education or similar setting involving post-secondary teaching and/or tutoring experience is required; Master’s degree in counseling higher education or related field preferred.
  • At least one-three (1-3) years’ experience working with multilingual and/or culturally diverse students.
  • Familiarity with social media, learning management systems (LMS), and web conferencing platforms.
  • Ability to handle and complete multiple programmatic tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of institutional stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage student data effectively, following FERPA requirements, and to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability to respond to written, telephone, and direct walk-in inquiries.
  • Ability to work and effectively cooperate in a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain organized, accurate, and detailed records and program reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others and to deal tactfully with others.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong commitment to student success and customer service.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
