General Summary: 

Working in a team environment, the Director of Systems will work under the direction of the Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (CIO). In this role, the Director of Systems shall be responsible for planning, implementing, and managing the computing infrastructure at the University, including Cloud Computing. The Director of Systems oversees activities associated with planning, designing, creation, maintenance, and change management of the computing systems and related software and services. They will be responsible for managing technical professionals and classified staff, as well as graduate and undergraduate student employees and student interns. The incumbent will adhere to proscribed industry guidelines and standards for systems. This position will require work at night and on weekends to support systems-related activities and events, as warranted.

Examples of Duties:

  • Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art technology related to computing systems and advises the Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and CIO as well as senior staff on emerging IT trends that will enhance the University’s mission and attainment of strategic goals.
  • Manages the day-to-day activities of all Systems staff and allocates and manages team resources for projects and tasks.
  • Supervises systems operations, including but not limited to incident management, system and software installation and configuration, system maintenance, patch management, performance management, backup and recovery, and systems inventory.
  • Oversees the management of all physical, virtual, and cloud-hosted servers (VMs) and their associated operating systems and software.
  • Plans and implements upgrades to all supported operating systems and system software for University servers.
  • Provides architectural and transitional leadership as cloud computing adoption increases and operational demands on the resulting hybrid hosting model require changes and modernization to the traditional IT operational model.
  • Maintains the integrity of Microsoft Active Directory and related identity systems, both on-premise and in cloud-hosted environments.
  • Leads the design and orchestration of all virtualized enterprise systems across the hybrid cloud infrastructure.
  • Manages distributed virtualized systems hosted on-premise and in private and public cloud environments built mainly on the Microsoft Azure and 365 A5 ecosystems.
  • Participates in data protection projects, plans, and documents failed backup jobs, provides support for storage and server backups, data recovery, disaster recovery, data migration, and operational reporting for the entire institution.
  • Participates in long-term planning and ensures it is consistent with business objectives for resiliency, disaster tolerance, and regulatory compliance.
  • Researches and recommends changes in hardware, software, and applications for continuous service improvement
  • Negotiates and maintains contracts for equipment purchase, repair, and system software maintenance.
  • Participates in projects integrating new technologies, including installing, configuring, and testing new hardware and software.
  • Champions a customer service culture that drives continuous improvement, high service standards, and operational excellence.
  • Encourages professional development among Systems staff and defines team objectives and outcomes while helping the team to adapt and learn.
  • Stays informed about the current state and future advances in systems infrastructure hardware and software technologies, including cloud (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS), server, storage, and systems software.
  • Actively advances the concepts of Diversity & Social Justice in the workplace through a commitment to hiring and maintaining a diverse workforce.
  • Job duties require that work may be needed after hours, on nights, and weekends.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field required. A Master’s degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 7-10 years of directly related work experience is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing staff and systems projects required.
  • Demonstrated experience with current Windows Server environments required; Unix preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with supporting Cloud-Hosted Server environments (i.e., Microsoft Azure).
  • Demonstrated experience managing email systems, performance monitoring software, and network management tools are required.
  • Experience managing systems administration and computer operation functions required.
  • Strong Rubrik (or similar virtual backup and restore PaaS) experience is required.
  • In-depth understanding of data retention methods and policies.
  • Exceptional knowledge of identity and access management solutions specifically focused on Azure and Microsoft Active Directory and federated identity architectures.
  • Demonstrated experience of more than five years with and/or current certification in Azure cloud deployment and management.
  • Experience working with external service organizations or vendors preferred.
  • Good communication (written and oral) and documentation skills are required.
  • Implementation of ITIL standards is required.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering services that meet defined service levels to the University’s community.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively delegate responsibility while maintaining oversight; demonstrated ability to adapt to evolving service and technology paradigms.
  • Possess strong project management skills, with the ability to translate ideas into a working strategy, gather requirements, and complete projects on time and within budget.
  • Must have strong customer service and interpersonal skills and the ability to coordinate and work with others to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Work collectively with individuals and groups from various backgrounds and organizational levels to incorporate their ideas, adapt to their needs, and form consensus in appropriate situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to build teams, motivate highly skilled implementation and operational teams, and create and maintain team spirit and harmonious working relationships between subordinates.
