The College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the general area of Data Science, to begin September 1, 2024. The CSM encompasses six departments: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics. It also includes the Center for Personalized Cancer Therapy (CPCT), a Student Success Center and leads several research core facilities on campus. The new hire will further strengthen and expand the CSM interdisciplinary and data-oriented research and demonstrate commitment to graduate and undergraduate research and education. The new hire will complement other CSM groups already involved in these endeavors. We consider Data Science broadly defined, encompassing multiple disciplines, ranging from theoretical and methodological contributions rooted in statistics, mathematics, and computer science to developing cutting-edge algorithms for diverse applications in science and engineering. Ideal candidates will have a strong track record in theoretical and applied research in fundamentals of Data Science, algorithm development, and dissemination of software packages for practical applications.

Successful candidates must possess a PhD and are expected to develop a strong, independent, well-funded research program. Six PhD degree programs in CSM, including the interdisciplinary Computational Sciences PhD and Integrative Biosciences PhD programs, and various faculty conducting data driven research across the CSM and the University provide a rich environment for collaboration and career growth. We seek a colleague who will support our goal of ensuring an inclusive, equitable, and diverse workplace. A generous startup package will be provided to root a strong research program. State-of-the-art research computing facilities, including several high-performance computing clusters are available to UMass Boston researchers, including local HPC clusters and the UMass system-wide shared cluster located at the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center. Partnerships and collaborations with academic institutions and industry research laboratories in the Greater Boston area offer substantial opportunities for professional development.

Located on Boston harbor, the University of Massachusetts Boston is the sole public research university in the city of Boston, offering undergraduate, Master's, and Ph.D. programs in almost 90 fields of study. It serves a diverse population of 16,000+ students and is nationally recognized as a model of excellence for urban public universities.

UMass Boston is an urban public research university with a teaching soul, whose impact is both local and global. We are the third most diverse university in the country - more than 60% of our undergraduate students come from minoritized communities and groups and more than half of our students are the first in their families to attend a college or university. Thus, our students come to us from richly diverse life experiences and backgrounds; they bring to our classrooms and research settings the robust range of perspectives growing out of the socio-cultural, economic, and historical contexts in which they have lived, along with the challenges they encounter, engage, and strive to overcome. We invite applications from candidates who engage the diverse life experiences of our student body, who appreciate that students bring their holistic selves into the academic setting, and who recognize and articulate how their own life experiences and backgrounds have shaped their journeys, practices, and commitments as researchers, scholars, and educators.
