Dock Staff/Instructors

Position Overview:Come join our team! We have many employment opportunities for those who love being outdoors on the water and want to share that with others. UMass Boston Marine Operations is looking to fill several positions within our Waterfront Recreation program.  Activities include kayaking, Stand-up Paddle boarding (SUP) and limited sailing.  We offer a relaxed outdoor work environment with competitive pay.

Responsibilities: 

  • Dock Staff responsibilities include responding to capsizes, run aground’s.
  • Ensuring safety and supervision of on-the water activities.
  • Teach beginning and intermediate Kayaking, SUP and/or Sailing.
  • Helping to run daily activities, monitoring all boats on the water and more.
  • Process ID checks and membership fees.
  • The work required is moderately physically demanding and requires a medium level of physical fitness.
  • Manage day to day boat issuance and instruction.
  • Execute sailing curriculum both on and off the water.
  • Perform start-up and close-down operations.
  • Perform general maintenance of boats in use.
  • Escalate any issues, concerns, recommendations to leadership staff.
  • Weekend and holiday availability is required.

Qualifications: 

  • Current US Sailing Level 1 Certification (or is willing to obtain prior to program start; may be eligible for reimbursement)
  • Experience operating a powerboat with a US Powerboat Safe Handling or MA Environmental certification, preferred but not required.
  • At least one year teaching experience with at least one type of boating discipline such as sailing, kayaking preferred.
  • Current First Aid and Adult/Child CPR certification or ability to obtain.
  • Intermediate knowledge of boating, such as sailing, kayaking, SUP, etc or willing to learn.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Friendly, outgoing, dynamic, and engaging. Previous experience with staff management.
  • Capable of general boat maintenance
  • Customer Service skills
  • Computer and some retail sales knowledge or willingness to learn a plus.

Compensation:

Starting Pay for Instructors: negotiable, depending on experience.

Schedule:

This position is seasonal and typically begins in late May and ends in October. Hours are generally up to 40 hours Wednesday through Sunday in season and Saturday and Sunday during shoulder seasons of June and October

Full-time hours available seasonally from May through October. Weekend availability is required. Work weeks are Wed through Sunday.  Available to start immediately.
