General Summary:
The full-time Clinical Social Worker and Coordinator of the Advanced Multicultural Training Program within University Health Services Counseling Center will provide high-quality, time-effective, evidence-based and culturally responsive clinical services, including: triage; emergency and crisis intervention services; referrals and evaluations; as well as individual and group counseling and psychotherapy. The incumbent will also provide consultation to faculty and staff and provide outreach to the campus community. The incumbent will manage a caseload to serve the maximum number of students who are appropriate for services at the University Health Services Counseling Center; and will consult with and/or make timely and appropriate mental health referrals for students as needed.
The creation of this position is a part of UHS’s commitment to centering the needs of our diverse student population, and providing advanced clinical training opportunities that can contribute to this mission. In addition to their above clinical responsibilities, the incumbent will work closely with the Training Coordinator and the Director to create an Advanced Multicultural Training Program at the Counseling Center and help maintain our existing training program. The Coordinator of Advanced Multicultural Training will develop relationships with relevant academic departments such as psychology, counseling, and social work graduate programs; pursue any relevant certification; oversee an application process for advanced clinical training; organize orientation and ongoing training and supervision opportunities for advanced trainees across diverse disciplines. The Coordinator of the Advanced Multicultural Training Program will assume primary responsibility for ensuring that trainees and supervisors in the training program understand and act in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Counseling Center.
The position is a full time (12 months) and benefitted one. This is a hybrid position which includes in-person and tele-counseling/remote work, and unique schedule options. . The incumbent will participate in regular paid meetings which may include clinical consultation, staff and departmental meetings, supervisor meetings, and in-services.
Examples of Duties:
Direct clinical and counseling services (65%)
- Provide high-quality, time-effective, evidence-based, culturally-responsive clinical services, including triage, emergency and crisis intervention, referral, as well as individual and group counseling and psychotherapy.
- Produce and maintain excellent and timely clinical records and participate in quality management activities, in accordance with University Health Services policy.
- Manage a clinical caseload so as to serve the maximum number of students who are appropriate for services at the UHS Counseling Center.
- Consult with and/or make timely and appropriate mental health referrals to other professional staff of the University Health Services, as well as to other departments or professionals on- or off-campus, as appropriate to meet students’ needs.
- Serve as consultant and resource person for faculty and other University staff about counseling programs and services available to students; collaborate with and consult with university departments to coordinate planning and intervention with students of concern.
- Conduct culturally-responsive outreach efforts for students and evaluate their effectiveness.
- Participate in the development of programming to meet changing student needs and requests.
- Liaison with university faculty, staff and other University personnel in order to be informed of and participate in campus activities which might be supportive of students’ needs.
- Maintain statistical records and submit, as required, reports on activities.
- Serve as back-up for other staff members, as necessary, such as by providing emergency or triage coverage when a staff member is absent.
- Keep current on clinical practice and supervision practices relevant to this setting, including risk management.
- Contribute to existing and new training programs, including through the provision of high-quality and culturally-competent supervision of trainees;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Training program development and maintenance (35%)
- Work closely with the Training Coordinator and the Director and create an Advanced Multicultural Training Program at the UHS Counseling Center.
- Create and update Advanced Training manuals and materials.
- Develop relationships with relevant graduate programs in psychology, counseling, and social work.
- Work closely with these academic departments to create and facilitate training opportunities for students and training clinicians.
- Review qualifications of and apply for relevant certification as an advanced training program (eg APPIC).
- Develop advanced training programs that will also provide adequate supervision and training opportunities for trainees.
- Oversee the application process for recruiting and selecting new trainees who show interest and commitment to training in multicultural mental health using a direct service and community outreach framework.
- Create and run yearly orientation for training program.
- Coordinate trainee office hours and room assignments.
- Contribute to outreach initiatives across campus toward a goal of bringing mental health awareness to diverse students, reducing stigma, and increasing access to culturally sensitive services.
- Oversee regular chart reviews on trainee cases.
- Serve as a “point person” for all issues related to trainees’ placement and work at the UHS Counseling Center.
- Serve as a direct supervisor to unlicensed clinicians in training at the Counseling Center and assume or assign direct supervision of a primary supervisor’s trainees if primary supervisor becomes unavailable.
- Oversee yearly or biannual evaluation of the Practicum and training programs.
Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited Clinical Social Work Education (CSWE) program, with emphasis on clinical social work, is required. The candidate must be eligible for licensure as an Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in the state of Massachusetts. A minimum of 3 years of clinical experience delivering evidence-based and culturally-responsive crisis intervention, evaluation, and treatment to young adults and/or adults is required. Experience working with underserved populations such as ethnic minorities, immigrant and refugee as well as first-generation populations, LGBTQ persons, or other diverse cultural groups is required. Preference will be given to candidates with interest in working with BIPOC students and communities. Proficiency in a second language other than English is preferred. Experience working in a college or university counseling center and/or experience providing services through the continuum of care (i.e. inpatient, partial hospital and outpatient) is preferred.
The following are required skills and abilities:
- Experience in conducting suicide/homicide risk assessment and intervention, crisis intervention and stabilization, case management, care coordination and work with high risk/high acuity clients.
- Demonstrated commitment to and skill in delivering high-quality, time-effective, evidence-based and culturally responsive evaluation and treatment including triage; crisis emergency assessment and intervention; individual couples and group counseling and therapy; and referral and consultation.
- Demonstrated experience in providing services to populations typically underserved by traditional counseling centers, such as LGBTQ populations, persons of color, immigrant or refugee populations, ethnic minorities, and first generation students.
- Demonstrated commitment to best practices within the profession and within the college aged population.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Timely and high-quality clinical documentation.
- Familiarity and evidence of ability to use an electronic medical record system and standard office productivity software, such as Outlook and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated capacity to relate effectively and harmoniously with students, faculty, staff and administrators, within the organizational and administrative structure of a university counseling center, University Health Services and academic departments.
- Demonstrated ability to flexibly manage the professional demands of a challenging caseload while maintaining positive and healthy perspectives and relationships.
- Adherence to standard of care and best practices.
- Demonstrated commitment and ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented environment.
- Strong organizational and record keeping skills.
- Strong commitment to customer and student service.
- Three or more years of experience in the supervision of clinicians-in-training.
The following are preferred skills and abilities:
- Specialty training and experience in areas relevant to the UMass Boston student population.
- Experience engaging with topics of racialized stress and trauma, systemic racism, marginalization, and stigma – which may impact the experience of BIPOC youth in counseling.
- Experience and strong interest in teaching and training clinicians including as a clinical supervisor.
- Experience in accreditation process and maintenance, such as APA, AAAHC, JCAHO, or IACS.

Supervision Received:
The Staff Psychologist and Coordinator works under the general clinical and administrative supervision of the University Health Services Director of Counseling Center and practices within departmental policies, individual privileging and credentialing and licensing procedures.
Supervision Exercised:
The incumbent will provide orientation, training and clinical supervision of graduate students in clinical psychology, psychology, counseling, and/or social work for client contact and documentation, performance evaluations and placement recommendations.
