General Summary: 

The Assistant Director of Laboratories will assist the Director of laboratories in the Psychology Department with technical and logistical support for research and teaching laboratories, and with these same areas of functioning within the central department. The incumbent will also act as a purchasing liaison and will interface with faculty, students, and vendors to optimize purchasing within university purchasing guidelines; and will be responsible for tracking purchases and basic accounting.

The Assistant Director of Laboratories will maintain and support technology resources for The Psychology Department.  This includes overseeing the integration of third-party systems related to research technology and office applications, understanding and monitoring system data use, assessing data needs, and maintaining those systems as needed. She/he will be the expert and lead for PeopleSoft finance applications in the psychology department and serve as liaison to the UMass central UPST system, and to UMass Boston's IT office. Other responsibilities include: providing reports and analysis for department research groups on and off campus, working and communicating with UMB IT to troubleshoot equipment and systems problems as they arise, providing training on our system for all departments IT and lab systems.

The incumbent will also be responsible for managing all financial requests from departmental and grant funds allocated to the psychology department.  This includes all purchases, advances, reimbursements, and fund allocations that are required to maintain the department and research project needs that are required.

Examples of Duties: 

  • Maintain a safe environment for the departments data with a basic knowledge of security standards;
  • Acts as the liaison for Research groups and departmental staff in supporting their finance and research data needs with the People Soft system, and other research related systems;
  • Research, suggest and purchase all manner of materials, goods and services as necessary to support teaching and research endeavors in the department, set-up purchase orders in Buy Ways and provide follow-up on orders and billing, and receive and distribute materials in a timely fashion;
  • Be able to understand, apply and explain the policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities;
  • Assist in the evaluation and acquisition of existing systems, new technology and product including but not limited to hardware upgrades and software leases, computers, office technology, audio/video equipment and wet-lap equipment;
  • Utilize a university Procard for purchasing and maintain a Procard log tracking purchases; reallocate expenses to appropriate accounts weekly;
  • Manage hardware and software applications utilized throughout the Psychology Department;
  • Maintain a running inventory of computers and other equipment for which The Psychology Department is responsible;
  • Maintain contracts for the department on computers, laboratory equipment, ultralow temperature freezers, as well as other contracts that may be needed;
  • Act as backup system administrator for The Psychology Department servers- includes monitoring of backup jobs and Server processes, virtual servers in a VMWare Sphere environment, server connectivity and storage of data, both encrypted and unencrypted;
  • Troubleshoot/repair Computers and peripherals;
  • Assist undergraduate and graduate students in basic use and configuration of statistical software (including SPSS, Nvivo, Dedoose), Microsoft Office Suite, Matlab, Qualtrics, and virus protection;
  • Install and configure computers on the local network;
  • Work with the Director of Laboratories on development of new systems for data collection, finance, purchasing and communication.


A  minimum of 3-5 years of related experience. Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Management, or IT preferred, experience and financial management also preferred.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Experience with networks;
  • Familiarity with multiple software platforms and operating systems: Microsoft office, Dell Kace, Image Now, Prairie server, PC imaging software;
  • Extensive experience in diagnosing and troubleshooting /repair pf PCs, Printers and other peripherals;
  • Good working understanding of IT data security best practices, FERPA, HIPAA;
  • Microsoft office expert level users preferred;
  • Experience in PeopleSoft preferred;
  • Experience in Higher Education preferred;
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment, while prioritizing duties;
  • Experience as admin on Windows 10 and 11 and server 2016 including knowledge of active directory management and AD Policies. Experience as Admin with Dell Kace;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Strong commitment to customer service;
