The University of Massachusetts Boston’s School for Global Inclusion and Social Development is seeking a visiting faculty member, to serve as a Visiting Assistant Professor to begin September 1, 2022. This is a benefitted position for one year, with the possibility of a second year depending on resources and performance.

The School for Global Inclusion and Social Development is focused on justice-based transdisciplinary inquiry, conducted by leading scholars who are committed to using research to solve pressing global problems. Candidates for Visiting Assistant Professor must have an earned in development studies, global/international/social/economic development, economics, social science, human rights or related field. Candidates must be engaged in research which focuses on Inclusion and the possible empirical areas of focus include but are not limited to race and ethnic studies, gender and sexuality studies, Indigenous studies, disability studies.

The teaching load for a Visiting Assistant Professor will be two courses per semester and courses include GISD 803 Qualitative Methods: Research Praxis for Global Justice and GISD 608 Ethics and Professionalism in Global Inclusion and Social Development. As a transdisciplinary School, we value intellectual diversity. The Visiting Assistant Professor will also work closely with PhD students on their dissertation proposal development, implementation, and to ensure a successful defense. The transdisciplinary nature of the program includes faculty and students with a variety of scholarship backgrounds and disciplines. We seek candidates who are steeped in the critical literature on race, ethnicity, indigeneity, gender, sexuality, coloniality, class, labor, nationality, immigration, disability, and/or other ascribed identity.

The University of Massachusetts Boston is a lively, diverse urban university. The GISD program is one of the most racial and ethnically diverse graduate programs at the university. Fall 2021 admission data reports that 55% of PhD students and 40% of master’s students identify as BIPOC. There is a significant number of international students with students coming from 23 different countries since the program began 8 years ago. Graduates from the GISD PhD program have become faculty, NGO managers, and directors of corporate responsibility for international banks and human rights organizations. Graduates from the MA are working in state and federal government, US and international human rights NGOs, and research and policy institutes.
