General Summary: 

The Coordinator will provide academic support for students attempting to meet the university’s writing proficiency requirement and will adjudicate credit overload and course repeat waiver requests. The incumbent will work closely with students experiencing difficulty meeting the WPR, including providing tutoring, running workshops and will also assist with the administration of the requirement, including placing and releasing holds, creating and monitoring learning contracts, and counseling students who are appealing their results.

The Coordinator will work closely with the Undergraduate Studies Director and Associate Director and will make recommendations regarding student requests using established standards and practices of the office.  The incumbent will have access to university course and student record databases and systems and will be responsible for updating student records and/or communicating decisions to the Registrar’s Office.  As needed, the Coordinator will assist with the evaluation of requests for credit overloads, course repeats, and re-admission processing and advising.

Examples of Duties: 

Writing Proficiency Duties

  • Assist in the provision of academic support for students experiencing difficulty meeting the writing proficiency requirement; work closely with a caseload of students having difficulty passing the writing proficiency requirement (WPR); provide tutoring and assist with running workshops as needed;
  • Assist in all aspects of organizing, scheduling, conducting, and supervising the EWRAP and portfolio sessions including responding to emails from students, managing graduate students during the sessions, and assisting with resolving conflicts with students;
  • Assist with the organization and monitoring of grading and appeals counseling sessions; assist the Associate Director in leading all grading sessions, including standardization procedures;
  • Counsel students who have not satisfied their writing proficiency requirement through EWRAP or portfolio processes;
  • Create and monitor learning contracts with students who have not satisfied the WPR according to the General Education guidelines for completion of the WPR;
  • Assist with the placement of students who do not meet minimum standards on the WPR into appropriate writing courses;
  • Assist with the placement and releasing of holds on student accounts, as appropriate, to ensure that they complete the WPR according to the guidelines for completion of the WPR and/or compliance with the terms of their learning contract;
  • Monitor and answer e-mail inquiries from students regarding the WPR;
  • Assist with the recruitment of staff for EWRAP and portfolio submissions, grading sessions and follow-up counseling; participate in grading sessions;
  • Assist with the development of reading set choices and provide constructive feedback on how well students respond to particular readings;

Undergraduate Studies/General Education Duties

  • Meet with students to provide information regarding General Education and university requirements, including Writing Proficiency, and explain policies and procedures for a variety of requests; refer students to advising and other support services, as needed;
  • In consultation with the Associate Director, adjudicate requests for credit overloads and course repeat waivers; 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications: 

Bachelor’s degree in a field related to teaching and a minimum of one-three years of experience working directly with students, preferably in advising and/or student services, is required. The ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and occasional weekend hours is required. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a field related to teaching;
  • Experience teaching critical reading and writing at the post-secondary level
  • Familiarity with the general education curriculum of the university is preferred;
  • Familiarity with and understanding of pedagogical issues associated with the education of non-native speakers and writers of English is preferred.
