General Summary: 

As a member of the Office of Global Programs team, the Associate Director supports international students, and scholars, as they integrate into and become engaged members of the UMass Boston community.  The incumbent will provide social, cultural, academic, and immigration advisement to international students and scholars who are under UMass Boston non-immigrant visa sponsorship; and will help to implement programs that ensure international student and scholar success, collaborating with academic departments and units to create a culturally inclusive campus.

The Associate Director is part of a cross-trained Office of Global Programs team that provides international students and scholars with holistic educational support, combining cultural programming and immigration services and assists the Executive Director in the daily running of the office. The incumbent will help to develop student support initiatives by working closely with the University’s academic departments and advising/student success offices, as well as the Division of Enrollment Management, the Office of Graduate Studies, the ESL Center, and Student Services offices. S/he will also work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders in international education on campus.  The incumbent will have the unique opportunity to develop the goals and programs of a new “international student success” meeting room space, where students can come for workshops, advising, social events; the incumbent will create new programs, such as peer advisors, for this space. The position will also contribute to the overall mission of the Office of Global Programs and its emphasis on creating a campus that provides meaningful support to international students and scholars.

The incumbent is part of a cross-trained team responsible for international undergraduate student, graduate student, and scholar advising and programming, helping to support the Chancellor’s new emphasis on student success.  The incumbent will create visa eligibility documents for the F-1 and J-I populations, will provide workshops and will serve as a resource on visa-related issues such as employment regulations.

Examples of Duties: 

  • Oversee the recruitment, hiring, training and evaluation of International Student and Scholars Services Advisors and encourage their continued professional development; encourage initiative, teamwork, collaboration and creative/innovative thinking;
  • Work with the Executive Director of the Office of Global Programs to envision, plan, implement, and assess innovative programs and services that enhance international student success, satisfaction, and retention; help provide new student-centered programming and advising processes as part of a comprehensive redesign of the Office’s international services; enact new approaches to immigration services that connect visa advising to student transition, engagement, and retention programming;
  • Plan, create, and deliver the Office of Global Program’s international programming, which can includes orientation week, international education week, workshops, info-sessions, immigration forums, travel planning coffee sessions, and academic department events; serve on committees related to international programming and events.
  • Plan, create, and deliver effective immigration advising sessions, with a special focus on engaging international students in a supportive educational community; deliver cultural programming that supports international students in campus residence halls, including a new living-learning community; support new student peer mentoring projects, collaborating with Office of Global Programs leadership to offer programming that connects students to educational resources;
  • Help to envision, implement, and oversee new International Student Success office/meeting/social space, designed to provide international students with a place to receive immigration services, programming, and academic and social support. Help to plan space’s mission and events. 
  • Remain current on US Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) laws and regulations, including I-20/F-1 and DS-2019/J-1 visa programs.
  • Evaluate visa eligibility documents for F-1 and J-I populations; produce Form I-20 for F-1 students and Form DS-2019 for J-1 visitors; maintain immigration databases, including providing daily maintenance of SEVIS student records and using Sunapsis electronic database system for student case management; ensure correct reporting to ensure US Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) regulatory compliance;
  • Provide immigration advising in both written and verbal communications; hold success-focused advising appointments with students; enact new protocols to enhance customer service capabilities of the Office of Global Programs;
  • Attend regional and national meeting and conferences, as needed, to stay current with new developments in the field of international education; engage in professional training to maintain up-to-date skills in immigration advising;
  • Support Office of Global Programs leadership in the implementation of strategic planning, helping the Office leadership to update and improve immigration service policies and procedures; document work flow, policies, and procedures as directed by Office leadership as part of collaborative office assessment;
  • Engage in clear communication with university leaders invested in international education; deliver compelling messaging, website content, and publicity materials regarding international student and scholar services;
  • Serve as an advocate for international students and scholars, acting as a liaison with other units on campus; serve on university and residence hall committees dedicated to international student and scholar success and internationalization of campus;
  • As part of Office of Global Programs team, rotate serving at the Office front desk, helping to serve a wide range of international audiences, including incoming and outgoing exchange students; provide customer service-oriented responses to inquiries relating to study abroad, service learning projects, research exchanges, and on-campus initiatives;
  • Participate in a wide variety of cultural and educational events designed for international visitors, students, scholars, and campus leaders, including some weekend and evening events; work collaboratively to staff all event functions of Office as needed;
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications: 

Master’s Degree in a field related to international education, social sciences or the humanities required. Minimum of three to five years of experience working with international students, within an educational setting is required. Demonstrated expertise in US Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) laws and regulations, including I-20/F-1 and DS-2019/J-1 visa programs and the requirements for serving as a DSO (Designated School Official) and working with SEVIS and Sunapsis required. Experience implementing international programming and holding immigration workshops required. Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends and holidays in order to support innovative programs and advising required.  Ability to rotate through shared 24/7 on-call status required. 

Additional Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in planning, implementing, and overseeing international student programming
  • Demonstrated commitment to international student success, engagement, and support
  • Ability to manage a staff, and delegate caseloads
  • Experience serving as Designated School Official (DSO)
  • Experience in immigration advising and counseling
  • Knowledge of Sunapsis procedures and batching systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior study or work experience abroad
  • Knowledge of a second language
