General Summary: 

The Career and Asian American Alumni Coordinator will develop and implement career development programming in the form of career preparation workshops, job shadowing, internships, and job placement using Asian American alumni as mentors and role-models. The goal of this position and the program is to assist first generation, refugee and immigrant Asian American students at UMass Boston to utilize the resources, programs, and services available to them in the Asian American Student Success Program. This position will be responsible for developing and administering career programs and services for Asian American undergraduate students. In addition, the position will advise and counsel students regarding career selection, job searches and internships, and implement a placement program.

The Asian American Student Success Program (AASSP) is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and integrates the educational, cultural, and linguistic expertise of faculty, staff, students, families, and local communities to build, assess, and sustain an ongoing, holistic program of activities, services, and research in order to achieve two specific goals: 1) to increase college access for Asian Americans who are low-income or first-generation college-goers and for traditionally underĀ­ represented Asian American ethnic populations; and 2) to increase Asian American retention, persistence, course completion, and graduation rates.

Examples of Duties: 

  • Locate and initiate contact with Asian American alumni of UMass Boston to engage them as mentors and speakers for program participants; create a system for keeping track of alumni who agree to serve as mentors and career speakers for AASSP;
  • Organize and execute an annual career forum for Asian American students with Asian American alumni that will facilitate career path stories and mentoring opportunities;
  • Develop shadowing, internship and job placement opportunities for students in collaboration with the Office of Career Services and Internships;
  • Recruit students to participate in programs and activities through flyers, tabling in key traffic areas of the university, use of social media, speaking in classes, and the like;
  • Develop and disseminate marketing materials to potential participants using flyers, social media, university broadcast systems about career and alumni activities, and the like;
  • Recruit, select, and supervise student employees to assist in planning and executing activities and events;
  • Provide career placement activities to participants as needed;
  • Maintain necessary records and evaluation reports in compliance with the grant;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

Bachelor's Degree in Education, Human Services, or a closely related field is required. Experience with student support and/or student activities with Asian American students is required. Demonstrated ability to work with low-income, first generation, immigrant, and refugee students from urban settings required. Experience supporting college-to-career pathways is preferred.  Bilingual skills in Vietnamese and experience working with local Asian American communities is preferred.  Familiarity with AANAPISI federal rules and regulations and with UMass Boston resources and support services is preferred.  Knowledge of employer requirements of the labor market in greater-Boston preferred.
