General Summary: 

The part-time Vessel Operator/Captain for Marine Operations should be a responsible USCG licensed captain who is willing and able to work in support of UMass Boston education programs.

Examples of Duties: 

  • Safe operation, cleaning, and general upkeep of the M/V Columbia Point – 65ft, 110 pass, USCG inspected passenger vessel.
  • Safe vessel tie up to docks, piers, ships, and moorings;
  • Positive communication with client crew;
  • Passenger embarkation/debarkation safety and operation;
  • Repair and modification of related equipment such as pumps, lines, hoses;
  • Grease, lube, and maintenance of the pumping systems;
  • Maintain accurate logs and records;
  • Interacts with University and non-University customers in a professional manner;
  • Supervises up to 3 deckhands.


Current and valid 100 Ton USCG Masters License with FCC License and valid TWIC card required. Incumbent must be able to work in all types of weather conditions and be available during off-hours. Must also be available to work as needed in support of other UMass Boston Marine Operations programming. Previous dock/marina experience preferred.

  • Ability to work remotely with little direct supervision;
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move heavy objects and/ or equipment;
  • Ability to take and adhere to instructions;
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others;
  • Small boat handling skills, passenger vessel experience a plus.
