General Summary: 

The Production Manager within the Department of Performing Arts will oversee and manage all events produced by the Performing Arts department at their designated spaces within UMass Boston’s University Hall. The incumbent will be responsible for setting-up audio recording and sound/lighting setup, video recording, mixing/mastering recordings, stage setup, as well as back-of-house during events; will co-manage/train ushers; and will liaise with Campus Events to book and reserve spaces. The Production Manager will also oversee the department’s production calendar, over-hire paperwork and supervision, and they collaborate with the program directors and coordinators to asses each event’s needs, and properly allocate resources.

This position may be assigned formal on-call duties in accordance with Article 18.3 of the contract between the University and the Professional Staff Union.  Assignment of on-call will be detailed using the “On-Call Assignment (Professional Staff) Form.” 

Examples of Duties: 

  • Assess the production needs of various department events and liaison with academic program directors and coordinators, and the Theatre Technical Director, inventorying production resources;
  • Create the department’s master production schedule and timelines; create load-in and strike schedules; build, maintain and troubleshoot the daily schedules during the academic year; liaising with the Theatre Technical Director as needed;
  • Manage the total production budget as assigned by the department’s chair, in collaboration with program directors/coordinators and Theatre TD; costing the technical rehearsal and performance schedule, sourcing over-hire, and help source/cost and rent/buy/acquire some production specific items;
  • Contract and supervise stage managers and production assistant staff; prepare paperwork and training materials for production staff, deliver training sessions and supervise stage management and production assistants during the academic year;  
  • Provide on-site work during venue load-in and strike at twelve (combined) Music, Theatre and Dance events per year (on-site work includes supervision and hands-on work); implement any lighting, audio, or staging needs for productions or events other than university theatre shows, which may include hanging and focusing and programming lights, setting up sound equipment, setting up staging and seating in the various spaces; ensure the proper maintenance of department equipment;
  • Participate in production meetings with faculty/staff, preparing final reports including detailed budget report, closing inventory of supplies, attending post-mortem meeting;
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 


Bachelor’s Degree in performing arts and a minimum of three-five (3-5) years of experience managing logistical elements of music/theatre/dance events required. Broad knowledge of theatrical production equipment and software (lighting, audio and video projection) is required. Experience and/or high learning agility with respect to project management software (Marcato, Google Apps, Microsoft Office suite, etc.) required. Ability to work evening and weekends required. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MFA preferred;
  • Experience in stage managing or producing performance events preferred.
