The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Massachusetts Boston seeks an assistant professor with expertise in social studies education with an emphasis on multicultural education. The position begins September 1, 2019.

We are seeking a collaborative and creative colleague who shares UMass Boston’s commitment to urban populations and social justice and who possesses inclusionary, transdisciplinary, and global perspectives on social studies education. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the development, growth, and enhancement of students in the middle/secondary education program through teaching, advising, and curriculum development. Strong qualitative or quantitative methodological expertise is expected. In particular, we are seeking scholars working on the leading edge of Social Studies Education and Multicultural Education research, specifically on learning in urban, diverse, immigrant contexts. 

Responsibilities include: carry out an active funded research agenda that makes significant contributions to the field of education; teach courses in the middle/secondary education program including Social Studies Methods; supervise students in their pre-practicum and practicum settings (field experience/student teaching); advise students; assist with curriculum development and professional associations' accreditation; and contribute to the university's urban mission, to university and departmental committees, and to professional associations. Faculty class schedule includes evening classes. Faculty also sometimes teach online courses.  

Requirements: Candidates must have: a terminal degree in Curriculum and Instruction or a closely related field (such as human development, psychology, education policy) or a terminal degree in History or a closely related field; substantial experience teaching Social Studies at the middle or high school level, preferably in settings that embrace multicultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic diversity; experience teaching at the college level; and evidence of scholarly productivity.
